H4Transport: Pioneering Innovation in UK Transport

Launched in partnership with the Department for Transport (DfT), H4Transport is an ambitious initiative transforming how we approach innovation in transport. Given the Road Transport Group’s (RTG) ambition around technology and innovation, H4Transport connects university students with real-world challenges to develop pioneering solutions that shape the future of UK transport. The programme tackles urgent issues related to autonomous vehicles, accessibility, bridge strikes, green infrastructure, road safety, and electric vehicle (EV) adoption.

Powered by CMP’s Mission Driven Entrepreneurship® model, H4Transport equips the next generation of problem solvers to create impactful solutions that drive sustainability, safety, and accessibility across the transport sector.

What is H4Transport?

H4Transport is CMP’s latest Mission Driven Entrepreneurship® programme, designed to connect university students with critical challenges sourced directly from the Department for Transport. Over 10-12 weeks, multidisciplinary teams apply the Lean Startup™ methodology to identify problems, test hypotheses, and develop Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) that drive real impact.

For 2025, H4Transport is working on 12 key challenges sourced by policy teams across the Road Transport Group, alongside its four Executive Agencies—DVLA, DVSA, VCA, and ATE. This ensures a broad, system-wide approach to tackling transport innovation, spanning policy, technology, and infrastructure.

Through collaboration with industry mentors, government advisors, and academic educators, H4Transport provides students with hands-on experience in solving real-world problems—from improving transport accessibility to advancing sustainable infrastructure. This unique approach equips students with the skills to tackle complex challenges and solve some of the most critical challenges in transport, shaping the future of UK transport innovation.

How H4Transport Works

H4Transport operates across five universities, connecting academia, industry, and government in a powerful collaboration:

  • A scenic view of rail tracks symbolising sustainable transport solutions and the future of connectivity in the UK

    Problem Discovery

Students work with problem sponsors like the Department for Transport, industry mentors, and academic advisors to conduct interviews and research, ensuring a deep understanding of the challenges.

  • The modern interior view of a moving train, reflecting the impact of transport innovation on enhancing passenger experiences and connectivity

    Innovation Sprints

Over 10-12 weeks, teams apply the Lean Startup™ methodology to test hypotheses, develop Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), and present actionable solutions.

  • A bustling London street with a taxi and bus in motion, highlighting the dynamic nature of urban transport innovation in the UK

    Real-World Impact

At the end of the programme, students share their findings with key stakeholders, driving forward scalable solutions that address real needs.

Reimagining Transport for a Smarter Future

The H4Transport Pilot harnesses the power of collaboration, bringing together students, government, and industry to tackle some of the toughest challenges in modern mobility. By blending fresh ideas, public insights, and industry expertise, these teams are driving real change through bold, practical solutions.

By uniting bright minds with public and private sector leaders, the H4Transport Pilot proves that collaboration is the key to building a safer, greener, and more accessible transport future. Together, they are reimagining mobility and driving forward innovative solutions that shape the way we move.

  • Making autonomous transport safer and more accessible with AI-powered safety innovations and inclusive design solutions.

  • Using real-time data analytics to predict and prevent road collisions, creating safer journeys for all.

  • Preventing costly bridge strikes with intelligent navigation systems and enhanced driver alerts.

  • Ensuring equal access to electric vehicle charging infrastructure, accelerating the transition to sustainable transport.

  • Driving digital adoption to reduce paper waste and emissions, enhancing efficiency and sustainability.

  • Using emerging technologies to improve road safety through transparent and reliable MOT systems.

  • Supporting local authorities with data-driven solutions to promote walking and cycling, fostering healthier communities.
